Companies are pre-qualified

The site endeavors to list all target pharmaceutical companies having sufficient resources to give you cash in your deal. Drawing upon the founder's 25 years of bus dev experience, a reliable rule of thumb suggests that companies with >$200 million in annual revenue or >500 employees are the organizations that are net in-licensors or acquirers of technology. Prior to reaching those thresholds, companies are typically sellers of technology, are seeking partners and cash, or if they acquire technology can only offer their stock as compensation.   « Previous | Next »

Ironically, competing sites often promote their size as an advantage (e.g. “we have over 10,000 pharma and biotech companies listed”). They include all sectors (pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical devices, manufacturers, etc.) and all sizes from the startup to major pharma. But in reality that’s their greatest shortcoming, forcing you to invest an exhaustive amount of time to manually sort through all the parties to determine who is a legitimate prospect active in your desired therapeutic space.

Global coverage, both private & public companies profiled

Our database includes pharmaceutical companies from all regions of the world that make their information available in English. Both private and public companies are profiled. Many competitors ignore the private sector, which is 20% of the target companies. Others make users purchase multiple, expensive reports on a region-by-region basis to gain global coverage.

Custom searches on unique criteria

Other sites simply list total revenues. BiotechProfiles lists each company’s revenue by major category (pharma, vaccines, plasma/blood products, etc.), identifies therapeutic focus (dermatology, cancer, etc), geographic headquarters, and more. This allows users to search and select companies with specific profiles. For example, if a USA company wishes to find a European partner for a dermatology product, one can instantly generate a list of prospects meeting that criteria, along with business development contact information.

About the Founder
Founded in 2008, Biotech Profiles LLC was the vision of Russell R. Smestad.  A career biotechnology and business development executive, Mr. Smestad has had prominent roles in building three major biotech companies focused on gene expression (DNA vaccines and transgenic plants) and gene silencing (RNAi) technologies.

Most recently, he was president of Mirus Bio Corporation.  Over a five year span he guided the transformation of Mirus from its original gene therapy focus to become an acknowledged leader in RNA interference.  The success of the company’s enabling siRNA delivery platform, Dynamic PolyConjugates™, led to the company’s acquisition by Roche for $125 million in September 2008.

Prior to joining Mirus, he was vice president of corporate development for PowderJect Vaccines Inc., a unit of PowderJect Pharmaceuticals PLC, where he was responsible for strategic planning and business development.  During his six year tenure, PowderJect grew from a privately held startup entity to become the 6th largest vaccine company in the world, ultimately being sold in mid-2003 to Chiron Corporation for $878 million.  From 1982 to 1997, Mr. Smestad held a variety of executive management positions in predecessor organizations to PowderJect Vaccines (Auragen Inc., Agracetus Inc. and Cetus Madison Inc.), including serving for six years as co-general manager of Agracetus and president of Auragen.  This era culminated in the 1996 sale of Agracetus’ plant science division to Monsanto Company for $150 million.

About BiotechProfiles LLC
The genesis for the BiotechProfiles concept derives from Mr. Smestad’s personal experiences in strategically and operationally guiding biotechnology companies over a career spanning nearly 30 years.  Frustrated by his own difficulty in identifying and finding background information on potential partnering prospects, particularly those located internationally, he created a database to keep track of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry leaders, then gradually expanded it to include business development information.  What started as a personal effort to address a professional need, he realized that there is a substantial external market for this information.  There are over 2,000 small to medium size biopharmaceutical companies in the industry, a majority with fewer than 20 employees, that are all trying to do the same thing – find licensors or acquirers for their technology.  And while there are others who pride themselves in the comprehensiveness of their sites, none are as uniquely tailored to the business development executive as BiotechProfiles.

In the local Madison market, various parties historically produced simple print directories of companies or created a list of links to company websites, but these tools provided limited transparency and lacked the in-depth data needed to support decision making and provide useful networking and self-help tools for biotech entrepreneurs.  As local companies grew and their visibility expanded, mergers and acquisitions often reversed this trend and made them nearly invisible as their image was managed by a corporate parent a continent away.   Surprisingly, even people within the local biotech community often couldn’t readily identify the life science employers with over 250 employees each.  And they certainly didn’t know who the management team was or who to contact for professional networking assistance.

To address these issues and provide greater transparency, visibility and industry networking capabilities at the local level, BiotechProfiles was born.  Our mission is to provide useful tools and connect biotech executives with the people and information they need to accomplish their jobs more quickly and effectively.
