Company History
Founded in 1965 by Robert Schumann as a division of Fabri-Tek Inc. of Minneapolis, it was spun off in 1967 as Fabri-Tek Instruments Inc. It was re-named Nicolet Instrument Corp. in 1971. NIC went public in the1980s. In 1992, NIC was acquired by the Thermo Instrument Systems, a division of Thermo Electron Corporation. In 2001, Thermo spun out Nicolet Biomedical and related biomedical businesses as Viasys Healthcare, keeping within Thermo Instruments the Madison based units formerly known as NIC, Nicolet Instrument Technologies, Noran Instruments (fka Tracor Nothern and acquired in 1994), and Mattson Instruments (acquired in 1995). In 2003 SPX Corp. acquired certain assets of Nicolet Instrument Technologies and renamed it LDS Test & Measurement LLC. In 2006, Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific merged to create Thermo Fisher Scientific.
