Company History
Agracetus was founded in 1981 as Cetus Madison Corporation, a subsidiary of Cetus Corporation, one of the biotech industry pioneers. The company name changed to Agracetus in 1984 when W. R. Grace & Co. purchased a 50% ownership interest. The company developed the "gene gun" or ballistic method of inserting genes into plant and animal cells. Cetus sold it's ownership interest to Grace in 1991. In 1996 the transgenic plant division assets and facility were sold to Monsanto for $150 million, and the genetic vaccine division was merged with PowderJect Pharmaceuticals of the UK.
