In 1980, Harlan Industries purchased Madison's Gibco Animal Research Labs. This acquistion included the SpragueDawley Company (known for the Sprague-Dawley albino rats), the A.R. Schmidt Company (multiple strains of rodents), Teklad Test Diets, and Teklad Trucking. In 1982, the parent company changed its name to Harlan Sprague Dawley Inc. Harlan purchased Madison's Holtzman Company in 1986 (known for the Holtzman albino rat). In 1997, the company expanded its breeding operations in Oregon WI and in 2003 acquired Diamond star Bedding Products of Madison. In 2008 the parent company changed its name to Harlan Laboratories Inc.
