Company History
Bone Care International Inc. was founded in 1984 by Richard Mazess and Lunar Corporation. Bone Care built its commercial base on Hectorol®, a vitamin D hormone therapy first approved by the FDA in 1999. It was used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with moderate to severe chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. The company completed its Initial Public Offering in January 1998. The company grew to >140 employees and >$80M in revenue before being sold to Genzyme Corp in May 2005 for approximately $600 million.
